Getting along with others does not mean you have to like everybody or be friendly with them.  It does mean you need to be able to connect with others in a positive way.  Here are 10 important people skills which will make connecting a little bit easier:

  1. Be a good listener. Don’t interrupt or make snap judgments
  2. Be tolerant of other’s points of view
  3. Be willing to compromise and cooperate if it is for the good of the group
  4. Treat others with respect and kindness
  5. Don’t talk about others behind their backs
  6. Focus on what you have in common with others rather than on your differences
  7. Be willing to extend yourself to others
  8. Learn to put yourself in another’s position and see things from a different perspective
  9. Learn to handle disagreements and conflicts in a positive way
  10. Be sensitive to others’ feelings
