Opposites
April 9, 2016Truth and You
May 25, 2016Reality is crazy enough so why would we want to deal with virtual reality? Virtual reality! Can virtual reality be used in counseling? If so how? How could a simulated three dimensional world help anyone to feel, or be, better?
Is it coming? Probably! As I think about how it could be used, for what issues it could be used and with what types of populations it could be used; it begins to enable the creative juices to flow! I can see a number of ways to present information for a variety of issues. And to present items in a way that would allow clients to see their issues in a unique way while at the same time demonstrate skills to incorporate into their daily life in order to change behavior would be wonderful!
Are we as therapists ready for it? Maybe not! Are our clients ready for it? Probably! Does distance counseling support it? Who knows! But the times are changing and we must change with it!
Why does this even make sense to consider? Maybe it doesn’t. But earlier today I saw a news program that spoke to the changing world of virtual reality and it is fascinating! The technology is continuing to improve and we must stay involved as much as possible or we will be left behind – never to catch up.
Depression, anxiety, addictions, marital problems, and other life struggles can be demonstrated in virtual reality while also demonstrating how to work through those issues! Is it as good as face to face counseling? Who knows! Will clients try it? Probably!
