The Twelve Steps of Relapse

November 22, 2013Magical moments change our lives! This one small sentence has such huge meaning for everyone. In mere seconds our lives can be changed for the better or for the worse. Moments of life change us where we are never to be the same and for which we have no way of knowing when those moments will happen. “Will you be ready?”
There are many moments that all of us can relate to such as the birth of a child, a wedding day, graduation from school, or the death of a beloved family member or friend. Each of us recognizes how those moments changed us both as human beings and in how we relate to the world.
Now consider those moments that we struggle to understand. Those people who drink and drive and cause horrific accidents. Going grocery shopping only to find yourself in the middle of a gun battle. Being at a presidential parade and seeing your president shot. (Remember President Kennedy?) Walking your precious pet only to have it suddenly attacked by another animal. Riding down an escalator and getting a shoelace caught in the machinery.
Moments in time. Moments that change who we are as human beings. Magical moments we wait for, other moments, not so much! Either type of moment requires us to be at the ready. Life experience gives us some readiness but it does not fully prepare us for “that moment”. Work very hard to be “fully present”, to be aware of what is happening at any given moment in time. Don’t miss a moment for any reason but particularly because you were “getting high”. What a waste of a moment. So I ask you again, “Will you be ready?”
“Each moment in time we have it all, even when we think we don’t.” – Melody Beattie
